Look past the silk-smooth chocolate and yodeling – contemporary Switzerland is all about epic journeys and sublime experiences. Switzerland's largest and wealthiest metropolis, Zurich, has emerged as one of central Europe's hippest destinations, with an artsy, post-industrial edge. Culturally vibrant, efficiently run and attractively set at the meeting of river and lake, Zürich is regularly recognized as one of the world's most livable cities. Much of the ancient center, with its winding lanes and tall church steeples, has been kept lovingly intact. Lucerne follows the recipe for a gorgeous Swiss city: a cobalt lake ringed by mythical mountains, add a well-preserved medieval town and a reputation for making beautiful music, then sprinkle with covered bridges, sunny plazas, candy-colored houses and waterfront promenades. Rearing above Lucerne from the southwest, Mt. Pilatus offers an above-the-treetops adventure, with 11 head-spinning trails from high-wire bridges to tree climbs. Mt Pilatus is fantastic for walking. Hikes include a steep, partially roped 2.8km scramble to the summit, affording views that stretch as far as the Black Forest on a clear day. Wandering through the picture-postcard Old Town, with its laid-back air, it's hard to believe that Bern (Berne in French) is the capital of Switzerland – but it is, and a Unesco World Heritage Site at that. In a nutshell, Bern seduces and surprises at every turn. Its museums are excellent, its bear park utterly unique, and its locals happy to switch from their famously inflected dialect to English – which all goes to show that there’s more to Bern than bureaucracy. Starting at $1,699 per person based on double occupancy.

Italy is an extraordinary feast of heart-thumping, soul-stirring art, food and landscapes rivaled by few and coveted by millions. With a heady mix of haunting sights, awe-inspiring art and vibrant street life, Italy's Eternal City of Rome is one of the world's most beautiful and inspiring capitals. Walk around the centre and without even trying you’ll come across masterpieces by the giants of the artistic pantheon – sculptures by Michelangelo, canvases by Caravaggio, Raphael frescoes and fountains by Bernini. Ancient icons such as the Coliseum, Roman Forum and Pantheon recall Rome's time as the fearsome hub of the Roman Empire, while St. Peter's Basilica is the greatest of the city's monumental basilicas. A trip to Rome is as much about lapping up the dolce vita lifestyle as gorging on art and culture. Pass away hours at street side cafes, people-watch on pretty piazzas, or enjoy the Roman pastime of eating out for dinner. Surprisingly small as it is, the riverside city of Florence is magnetic, romantic and busy. Its urban fabric has hardly changed since the Renaissance, its narrow streets evoke a thousand tales, and its food and wine are the global standard of quality. Imagine the audacity of building a city of marble palaces on a lagoon – and that was only the start of how Venice came to be. Garden islands and lagoon aquaculture yield specialty produce and seafood you won’t find elsewhere – all highlighted in inventive Venetian cuisine, with tantalizing traces of ancient spice routes. Ride a gondola through the canals, stop by a restaurant for a happy hour, and fall in love with a true gem of a city. Starting at $1,599 per person.

Chile is a country of startling contrasts and extreme beauty. Transition one moment from its tangled and vast wilderness not yet blemished by human intervention into its sprawling urban setting teeming with humanity. In Santiago, the more you look, the more you find. Zigzag through its colonial architecture, indulge in the cafes of its bohemian Barrio Bellavista, and explore some of the world’s best streets in Santiago, dramatically sandwiched between the snow-capped Andes and the Chilean coast. In Patagonia, prepare to be dazzled by fjords and mountain peaks. A stunning mix of glistening lakes, smoldering volcanoes, temperate rain forests, and meandering rivers rich in wildlife turn this slim swath of land into a playground for skiing, whitewater rafting, and trekking. Starting at $1,599 per person
